Today I’m doing yet another webinar for IPBA. Many of you asked for a recap of my October 2015 webinar. Here you go, my friends:
Genesis of the October 2015 webinar: People kept asking me, “Kathryn, how in the heck did you get on over 100 radio shows/podcasts, 7 major TV spots, and hundreds of articles and blog posts in a YEAR?“.
I didn’t want to keep all the secrets to myself. Here are some awesome tools, techniques, and links (with affiliate discounts!). I’ve organized them by solution. I’ve left TV off, assuming that will take some research on your part. Plus, I covered in the webinar what to look for on TV websites. 🙂
Solution #1: Podcasts
A. Get on your first a podcast ASAP. There is an individual, Engel Jones, who is looking to meet a podcasting GOAL: Create a Guinness World Record for the Most Podcast Interviews in 3 months-1509 interviews! (Note, as if the February IBPA webinar, this opportunity has passed, but there are still many others!). Engel is the podcast host of Twelve Minute Convos. He has set a goal to create a Guinness World Record for the most podcast interviews in 3 months-1509. He interviews some great people. If you have 12mins. Connect with him. His calendar is available at https://calendly.com/amazel/convos. You can listen to the podcast here.
B. Hustle to get on other podcasts. Get your one-sheet together and looking sharp. If you are looking for an example one-sheet to get you on podcasts, you are welcome to look at mine. If you want to check out my podcast (to be a guest), listen to the show first. Even better, rate/review/subscribe. Here’s my show on itunes.
C. Join the Podcast Success Academy using this special link. This is a membership site by the awesome podcasting coach Yann Ilunga. I’m pretty impressed with his deal he’s offering for a pre–purchase (since the Academy doors won’t open for a few days). For this pre-launch, people will save over $100 on their yearly membership and will get access to $400+ of bonuses. Deal is available for 7 days only, from what I understand. (Note: This offer has passed for the February 2016 webinar, but just send me a note (use “Ask Kathryn” on the right hand bar, and I’ll get you a deal for this program as Yann is a dear friend). 🙂
D. Sign up with Interview Connections (Jessica Rhodes). $397/month gets you 4 bookings on podcasts per month. This page is the application page: http://www.interviewconnections.com/apply/
E. Become a “certified podcast guest” and let Interview Valet (Tom Schwab) set up your interviews on some pretty big shows. This is the Letter of Understanding which gives you an overview of all of the benefits of the program plus pricing.
*See below for some links to help with questions asked on the webinar regarding podcast size/reach.
Solution #2: Radio
C. Alex Carroll’s Radio Publicity Program is extensive and offers an incredible database of the BIG shows. If you use the link here you’ll get $200 off the $997 price point for the entire program. Its a great resource if you want to get on BIG shows.
Solution #3: Guest Blogs
Solution #4: Social Media Done Right
This podcasters roundtable with Ray Ortega talks quite a bit about how to use (and not use) social media.
Please let me know if you have any further questions. If you are interested in a training program, please contact me and perhaps we can put together a group for highest efficiency.
*I thought these posts from Jessica Rhodes would help to answer some questions about podcast size and reach:
Regarding audience sizes:
Regarding publicity and podcasting:
About the Webinar:
An effective marketing and publicity campaign can make or break the success of a book. In fact, many large publishers refuse to enter into publishing agreements without the guarantee of a certain number of author appearances and/or the use of certain top tier publicists. Publicists can cost $3-5K per month and many require a limited length of engagement, often costing tens of thousands of dollars in total.
Can smaller/independent publishers and/or authors afford this type of investment? The answer is often… no. Similar to the venture capital industry, the book business relies on a small number of stellar financial performers to cover the costs of the majority of projects that do not create a positive ROI. In other words, large publishers use the success of “blockbusters” to make up for the less robust financial performers across a large portfolio. But independent publishers/authors don’t have the advantage of a diversified portfolio. Therefore we must make wise, strategic choices about what we can afford for the few titles we have. An expensive publicist is often an impossible part of our strategy.
However, modern technology (and quite a bit of hustle) provides smaller publishers and authors with plenty of opportunity to get our books in front of the reading audience. This webinar will cover five powerful steps that every publisher/author can use to make the most of even the smallest marketing/publicity budgets. The advice is tested and proven by an author/publisher who has arranged over one hundred TV, radio, podcast, print and online appearances in the last year. The webinar promises to leave you empowered with action items and practical tools to make the most of your marketing/publicity efforts.
