Foundation Strengthening Yoga Poses

Yoga and mindfulness can be great tools for strengthening your foundation. These foundation strengthening yoga poses are related to Chapter Two of Mountain Mantras: Wellness and Life Lessons from the Slopes (Get Some Good Boots On).

Yoga and mindfulness help to bring some energy down and away from our busy minds and into our feet. The following three poses are my favorite for feeling rooted and grounded:

  • Mountain. It seems simple because you are just standing there, but there is much more to this pose. You want to get your shoulders back, tighten your abdominal muscles, and spread your weight evenly across your feet so that you feel extremely balanced. These step-by-step instructions from Yoga Journal are great. Also see the first photo below.
  • Tree. This pose is great for getting more attention directed toward your feet, especially the one that is firmly planted on the ground. Keeping your gaze steady on a distinct focal point helps your balance. Connect with your body and listen. These step by step instructions from yoga journal are great.  See second photo below.
  • Half moon. Everyone has a favorite pose, and half moon is mine. I love the feeling of expansion as I reach toward the Earth with one leg and extend one arm upward. Read these step by step instructions from Yoga Journal. This pose reminds me of the famous quote by Theodore Roosevelt: “Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground.”  See third photo below.

2) Tree

3) Half Moon
