Finally, a resource came across my desk that I was asked to share with my audience. It comes from Creately, and is based on the very popular SMART goal methodology.
Step 1: Make sure to write down your goals. This step will help you prioritize your goals. As you write them down, you will have the chance to evaluate which goal is more important and which can wait, and plan accordingly.
Step 2: Apply SMART. Make sure your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-specific).
Step 3: Identify the obstacles so you can plan accordingly how to overcome them.
Step 4: Create an action plan to identify the steps you need to take to achieve your goal.
Step 5: Continue to monitor your progress so you can keep yourself accountable.
Whatever method you choose to follow when setting your goals, choose SOMETHING. I am very much okay with uncertainty and going with the flow, but I also believe that if you want to get somewhere, you must actually enter the destination in the GPS or Google Maps.
Another great analogy that I love (from Emily!) is the idea that you’re sitting in a cosmic restaurant waiting for your delicious meal, and you’re getting impatient and hungry. But guess what? You forgot to actually put in your order to the cosmic waitress!
So set your destination, or place your order (depending on what analogy works best for you) TODAY! 🙂
