E026: Be Realistic and find a soul-centered community with IBPA’s Angela Bole

Angela Bole is the chief executive officer of the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), the largest book publishing association in the U.S., serving independent publishers and self-published authors.

IBPA’s mission is to lead and serve the independent publishing community through advocacy, education, and tools for success.

IBPA’s vision is a world where every independent publisher has the tools and knowledge needed to professionally engage in all aspects of the publishing industry.

Here are the fun nuggets from our interview:
Fun nugget #1: IBPA is “here to help you” as an aspiring author/publisher.
Fun nugget #2: The industry IS knowable (and IBPA is working on things like checklists for a professionally produced book). Here is a link to that checklist.
Fun nugget #3: Self-publishing is still suffering from a “stigma”- but things are changing for the better.
Fun nugget #4: Amazon is something that, as authors, we need to learn to live with. (Here is the article Angels referenced in the interview).
Fun nugget #5: Beware of purchasing publishing services (we talk about industry predators).
Fun nugget #6: Scale is important if authors/publishers want to see some traction financially.
Fun nugget #7: Don’t let the thin margins scare you away; remember the Karma paycheck! 🙂
