My guest today is Joshua Tallent.
Joshua is the Director of Outreach and Education at Firebrand Technologies. He is an expert in metadata and eBook development and an acclaimed teacher and guides on digital publishing.
In addition to heading up training and outreach efforts for Firebrand, Joshua serves on multiple industry committees and working groups and teaches in-depth workshops and sessions at publishing conferences throughout the year. He also leads the development of FlightDeck, a technology for ebook quality assurance that we cover during our interview.
Here are the fun nuggets from our interview:
Fun nugget #1: You need to know what you might NOT know; ask your publisher what services they are using (know your stuff!)
Fun nugget #2: Self-publishing is becoming much more of a valid model; more services (such as NetGalley and FlightDeck) are available even to the single title publisher/author
Fun nugget #3: Metadata is just information about your book. Don’t be afraid of the term!
Fun nugget #4: You should keep all of your metadata in one single place
Fun nugget #5: Metadata is dynamic (you can continuously change it)
Fun nugget #6: Ebooks are complex, and quality assurance is necessary; print books are very much still a strong part of the industry (60%-70% of book sales). Overall, the quality of what is being sold to consumers is the key to the trends.
