E076: Create Better Relationships with Brainspotting (Cherie Lindberg)

In this episode, we continue our exploration of the Brainspotting modality.

Our guest, Cherie Lindberg, discusses an application of Brainspotting she is developing called BSP-CC (Brainspotting for Co-regulating Couples).

We discuss Cherie’s cutting edge research in this area and how she is building upon the work of others to create ways to increase our ability to create and sustain loving and connected relationships.

Brainspotting is a modality discovered by Dr. David Grand. Please visit www.brainspotting.com to learn more.

Here are the seven mantras from this episode:

Mantra #1:  BSP-CC Is a combination of four main ingredients: 1) Brainspotting, 2) Imago relationship therapy, 3) attachment theory, and 4) polyvagal theory.  Cherie tips her hat to leaders of each of these modalities/theories respectively:  Dr. David Grand, Harville Hendrix, Dr. Dan Siegel, and Dr. Stephen Porges. There are countless other contributors to work in these areas, including John Bowlby (attachment styles), W. Winnicott (good-enough parent), Dr. Sue Johnson (Emotionally Focused Therapy), and many others.

Mantra #2:  Trust is the result of a process or cycle as follows. Need => Arousal  => Gratification => Trust

Mantra #3: To regulate and co-regulate, don’t get stuck in the “story” (because the stories we tell ourselves are often negative)

Mantra #4: The BSP-CC process requires risk and vulnerability (Cherie mention’s the work of Dr. Brene Brown and how she has termed vulnerability as the new superpower).

Mantra #5: Brainspotting is the way to clear out the dysregulation from the “downstairs brain”.

Mantra #6: Personal growth and Improvement starts with awareness

Mantra #7:  Improvement continues with communication skills including presence, listening, summarizing, validating, empathy, and the WAIT (Why Am I Talking) technique.

There are many videos with Brene Brown on vulnerability, but here is a short (5 minute) one that gives a great message:
