Oatmeal Morning Goodness. OMG!
Oats are on the list of heart-healthy foods. If you are eating grains, there is nothing more satisfying than a bowl of oatmeal to start your day.
Steel-cut oatmeal is even better than the typical rolled-oat variety. Steel-cut oats have a nutty flavor and provide a bit more ‘chew’ than old fashioned or instant oats.
Prior to owning a rice cooker, I rarely ate steel-cut oats because they require a bit of prep time. With my rice cooker, I just throw in my oats and water and press ‘start’. In 30 minutes, I have perfectly cooked oats (no burning, no over-boiling and no standing over the oven). Meanwhile, I can get ready, make lunch, or even workout.
Here is my favorite OMG recipe:
Ingredients:
– 2 cup steel-cut oats (use rice cooker cup)
– 1/4 cup flax seed
– 4 cup water (use rice cooker cup)
– 1 large apple or pear, peeled, cored, chopped
– 1 t. Cinnamon
– ¼ t. Nutmeg
– 1/4 cup Brown sugar
– ½ cup Raisins
– 1/2 cup Pecans
– 1 T. Butter
Directions:
In the rice cooker, place steel-cut oats, flaxseed, water, apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Press start. Once done, add brown sugar, raisins, pecans, and butter (serves 6).
